I believe there are a few different application methods for powder coating, but the foundations of each of them are largely the same.

I recently hired Insteel Blacksmiths & Fabricators LTD - a company offering powder coating in Cornwall, South West England - to apply powder coating to some metal beams for me so I can tell you what I know based on my experience with them.

The dry powder in powder coating is first given an electrostatic charge so that it sticks and adheres to the item you need finishing. It’s then sprayed from a powder coating gun evenly onto the surface. Powder coating can be applied in different thicknesses.

Once the surface is covered in a uniform coating of the powder to the correct thickness, it needs to be solidified into one solid mass so that it properly adheres. To achieve this, the coating is then “baked” in a high temperature to complete the finish.

The materials used to make the dry powder have properties which make them uniquely suited to outdoor use and make great durable finishes. They’re weather resistant, fade resistant, and scratch resistant.
